What is hypnotherapy and how does it work? Well, that question presupposes that hypnotherapy works. And it does… much of the time. Other times, no. It depends upon a number of things, mainly the linguistic skills of the hypnotherapist. Hypnotherapy is simply a process that – when done effectively – guides the client into a very relaxed state which in turn ties up the conscious mind while slipping affirmations, commands and suggestions directly into the unconscious mind with a view to making changes.
Why is it important to communicate with the unconscious mind? Since ALL learning and changes in behave-iour have to happen at the uncons-cious level for them to ‘stick’, there’s no point in attempting to make changes at the conscious level. When a client says, for example, I want to feel and be more confident, she wants that ‘consciously’… and if that were enough, she wouldn’t need to come to see me.
If she consciously wants to be more confident, why isn’t she? Because her unconscious mind or some part of it at least, doesn’t want her to be. This doesn’t mean that it has it in for her or anything like that. It simply means that it has not yet been persuaded to change that way of behaving – and, it’s important to understand that her unconscious would have a positive intention for having her act shy or uncertain or unmotivated – or whatever way she’s behaving and believing about herself.
Give us an example. Sure. Let’s look at Bob – he wants to stop smoking. He knows all the reasons why it makes sense to stop and has a strong desire to do so, but he still reaches for the pack twenty times a day. He feels terrible that he cannot control himself. Bob started smoking when he was sixteen. He wasn’t consciously aware of it at the time, but he started smoking so that he could be accepted by a group of peers. Smoking was cool, and it also meant fitting in and acceptance – desirable things for many people. Now that Bob wants to stop ‘consciously’ isn’t enough. He needs to reprogram his unconscious – to educate it or persuade it, if you will. Through repetition, when we get his unconscious to realise that it can stop smoking and still get its positive intention for Bob (being cool, fitting in and acceptance) in some other way, then it lets go of the old habit and creates a new one.
What is the difference between the HYPNO-Personal method and any other form of hypnotherapy? The difference is that it’s not generic or one-size-fits-all. It’s personal, tailor-made if you like. Let’s say you are full of fear and uncertainty as a result of the current economic climate, not to mention wars or changing weather conditions, and you want to feel more confident, motivated and focused, okay? When it comes to hypnotherapy, you have two options: see a hypnotherapist, or buy a hypnotic CD. If you go to a typical clinic in Dublin, the hypno-therapist will most likely recommend you have 8 or so sessions to achieve your outcome, at a cost well over €1000. Of course, there are no guarantees of success, and often the success rate is not very high because most hypnotherapists use generic scripts. If you buy a CD (often available in Self-Help books – Paul McKenna is a good example), it is a lot less expensive, but also uses a generic script.
What do you mean ‘generic’ script and what’s the problem with that? If you want to use hypnotherapy to become more confident, motivated and focused, the hypnotherapist, or the CD, will have a ‘one-size-fits-all’ script for that. Now, since a person will buy an affirmation, suggestion or command from themselves a hell of a lot faster than they will from you or me, if the words in the hypnotic script are those of the client, then you get success faster! Also, you can get very specific about outcomes – such as the date the client wants it, how he’ll feel when he gets it, what he’ll see and hear that will let him know that he’s got it, and so on.
How much does hypnotherapy cost? Anybody who has visited a hypno-therapist knows that its not cheap. Prices start at around €100 per hour and go up as high as €500, depend-ing upon the hypnotherapist. A recent example of price was given in Grazia magazine where a Harley Street hypnotherapist (the one who helped Lily Allen lose 20lbs through hypno-therapy) said that she charged her £300 per session (a session is usually around an hour). So, if Lily went for, say, ten sessions over the course of a number of months… you do the math.
How much would it cost to use the HYPNO-Personal method? In this case, you’d save over £2600, and there would be no limit on the number of HYPNO-Personal sessions you could have.
How’s that?
