Some Trainers are Better Than Others

This is important to understand before unleashing a trainer on yourself or your people. You want the best… so, how do you ensure that you get it?

Like so many trainers, before I came across NLP, I was a trainer simply because that is what I called myself. I had been fairly successful in sales for most of my life and felt that I had accumulated enough knowledge – and enough ‘bottle’ – to stand in front of an audience and speak confidently. And with that idea in mind and the best intentions at heart, I began training sales people in small to medium sized companies and enjoyed a healthy level of success.

Many years later, after completing seventeen days in a row of the hardest training I’d ever taken part in (namely: INLPTA Certified Trainer of The Art & Science of Neuro-Linguistic Programming), I had mixed emotions. On the one hand, as you can imagine, I was over the moon about achieving this accolade. On the other hand, I wished I could go back in time and undo all the training I’d ever delivered in the past.

I learned many things over those seventeen days, including this: Just because you are knowledgeable about a topic and are articulate and confident in speaking in front of others about it, doesn’t mean that you are an effective trainer. Uh-uh, far from it.

It is said that when you don’t know something, that is ignorance: when you don’t know that you don’t know, that is blindness. Before I became a Certified NLP Trainer, I was blind. There were so many things I didn’t know that I didn’t know.

Considerations to make before you choose a trainer

As I was beginning to write this section, I did a little research on the web and discovered that Connirae and Steve Andreas (two of the very best, most effective trainers around) have covered this excellently on their website. I’m not particularly interested in rewriting what’s already been written so well, and so here’s a link you can follow to the section on their site which covers this matter. http://nlpca.com/A_Consumer_Guide_To_Good_Traini.html
